Katheryn V. “Kitty” Schroeder, formerly of Kennett Square
Katheryn V. “Kitty” Schroeder, of Shawano, Wis., passed away Friday, Jan. 31, 2014, in Shawano. Born on Aug. 14, 1919 in Kennett Square, she was the daughter of the late Stuart and Edna (Ruoss) Battan. She graduated from Kennett Square Consolidated School in 1938 and went on to receive a degree as a dental hygienist from the University of Pennsylvania in 1939. She served her internship at Northwest Hospital, after completion of her internship she worked for Delaware State Board of Health. During World War II Kitty was employed by the United States Military as a dental hygienist. On May 14, 1943, Kitty was united in marriage to Robert W. Schroeder in De Redder, La. Robert preceded her in death on Dec. 15, 2004. While Robert was on active duty at Fort Sheridan, Ill., Kitty served as president of the Officer’s Wives Club, as chairman of the Thrift Shop and as organizer of the Post nursery. Kitty was active with the American Legion Auxiliary for many years and was a past president of Post 38 in Appleton. She was also a past president of the Outagamie Easter Seal Society and an organizer of the Easter Seal Gift Shop in Appleton. After moving to Shawano, Kitty became very active with the Zion Lutheran Church in Shawano. She served as president for the Women of Zion, she served on the Church Council and she enjoyed all facets of church activities. She also served as president of Shawano Women’s Club. Katheryn is survived by her son, Robert Schroeder, of Shawano, Wis.; two grandchildren, Scott (Michelle) Schroeder, of Clintonville, Wis. and Leslie Schroeder, of Appleton, Wis.; a grandson-in-law Pete Mielke, of Marion, Wis.; as well as seven great-grandchildren, Joshua (fianc Morgan), Samantha (fianc Cameron), Matthew and Adam Mielke and Dustin (fianc Alyson), Dylan and Devon Schroeder; and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Col. Robert Schroeder; her parents, Stuart Battan and Edna Battan Craig; her step-father, Guy S. Craig; and a granddaughter, Stephanie Schroeder. A Memorial Service was held on Feb. 6, 2014 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Shawano, Wis., with Rev. Gisele Berninghaus officiating. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Zion Lutheran Church Building Fund or Zion Lutheran Church Parish Nurse Fund, 1254 S.
